This also reminded me of Marauders, which I never read, but maybe should, because Pirate Bobby Drake is somewhat cannon! XD
But, my version -
Bobby Drake did his best to be what everyone wanted him to be, whether that be a dutiful son who would become an accountant some day at his father's company, or the kind of boyfriend who remembered anniversaries, the friend who *always* knew the joke to make to distract from whatever situation needed distracting from, or the almost forgotten powerhouse who could sway the battle for mutant rights. He did such a good job at being what everyone wanted that he never truly considered what he wanted.
Until the day someone offered him the chance to become the Dread Pirate Robert(s). (That extra (s) didn't dissuade Bobby at all.) He never looked back.
