Today is partly cloudy and pleasantly cool.  :D

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

I set out the flats of pots and watered them.  It's down to 2 partial flats now.

EDIT 5/24/25 -- I finished pulling the tall grass out of the septic garden.  I cut down the tree seedlings.

I've seen a catbird and a fox squirrel.

EDIT 5/24/25 -- We walked the prairie garden to point out where to remow paths.  My partner Doug is out mowing that and the ritual meadow.

Underdog stories

Matthias is in Berlin, for reasons that will resonate if you’re a fan of specific sports teams (a character trait that passed me by), but is also just something straight out of an underdog Hollywood sports movie. He’s been a fan of his local football (soccer) team for his whole life — unless you know Germany and German football well you won’t have heard of the city or the team — which is generally pretty thankless. Comparably, they’re not a very good team, and yo-yo back and forth between the first, second and third divisions.

This year they are in the third division which is like only a few steps above being amateurs. But the third division also competes with the higher division teams for the cup (although normally in practice the lower division teams get knocked out early on by better teams), and this year, for some bizarre reason, his team beat the then-highest first division team in the cup quarter final. (To translate this to your own context, think of any competitive thing you can think of, and imagine a semi amateur person/team beating the best professional person/team in that event, that’s how unlikely this was.)

Everyone thought it was just a fluke, but then they won their semi final as well, so now they’re competing in the cup final in Berlin today. If they win this they get to compete at European level next year against all the more famous European teams you might have heard of, while still only being in the second division (since they were promoted due to also doing well within their third division competition, but you can’t be promoted from third to first division). It’s very unlikely they win today, but if they do, Matthias always said he would go to their first ever European game, no matter where it was (so, have fun going to Baku, I guess).

He's currently hanging out in Berlin with his sister and nephew, and waiting to meet up with their other friends, having travelled — since it was bizarrely cheaper and more convenient — via Poznan in Poland (where he stayed with another of our friends overnight) and an early train from Poznan to Berlin this morning.

Another nice thing that's happening alongside all this is that the local MP from their home region — knowing that lots of families would be in Berlin for the game — arranged to give a free tour of the German parliamentary building for a bunch of children who were there for the game, including our nephew.

The whole thing is quite surreal.

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

(Sorry for forgetting to post yesterday!)

Philosophical Questions: Stealing

People have expressed interest in deep topics, so this list focuses on philosophical questions.

If I steal a loaf of bread from you and eat it, when does the bread itself cease to be yours and becomes mine?

In practice, when you remove it from where the owner put it. But ethically and legally, stolen property is not ever yours.

Oooh, 1987? I vaguely remember that year. 3 schools, since I left MS in the last term of 6th grade, finished it at a new one in FL, and started 7th grade down there (before moving back in the winter to finish back in MS). Let's see how many tabs I open. Hey only 22 catching my full attention. Let's narrow that down. hmm, 13? Let's do this.

(Ignore the fact that I only submitted one prompt for this series and then forgot to do more before the deadline whoops)

Rhythm Heaven is a series of rhythm games published by Nintendo. If you know the Warioware series, it’s kind of like that: a bunch of wacky minigames where you hit the buttons (or the stylus, depending on the game) to the rhythm of the music. But what kind of minigames can you expect? Well, we’ve got:

- A monkey and a mandrill (his name is Mandrill) coach you in golf
- You, an astronaut, must translate a Martian’s message to the people of Earth
- You, a Martian, must translate a farmer’s tinder profile to the Martians back on base
- You are a little seal that must step and roll
- Tap dancing with monkeys!
- a watch operated by high-fiving monkeys (this is a great game for people who like monkeys)
- ping pong in space!
- baseball in space!
- a  guy who has been stuck in the basement until he masters karate (in French it’s been 55 years)

You can earn little tidbits of lore for doing well in minigames, in the form of Reading Material and Rhythm Items (the latter is a Megamix-exclusive). But the fandom also makes a lot of their own headcanons, lore, and ships!

As of writing this, there are four games in the series: the original game for the Game Boy Advance (known in the fandom as Rhythm Tengoku, as it was never localized outside of Japan, and Rhythm Heaven Silver, named after a popular fan translation), Rhythm Heaven for the DS, Rhythm Heaven Fever for the Wii, and Rhythm Heaven Megamix for the 3DS.

The downside is that the physical copies of the games are notoriously difficult to get nowadays. Luckily, it’s very easy to hack your 3DS (for legal reasons I cannot confirm nor deny that I have homebrewed at least 3 game systems).

Birdfeeding

Today is partly sunny and mild.  It rained a little yesterday.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, a catbird, a blackbird, a blue jay, a young fox squirrel on the hopper feeder, and an adult fox squirrel running through the trees.

I put out water for the birds.

I set out the flats of pots and watered them.

EDIT 5/23/25 -- I pulled grass from inside the septic garden.

EDIT 5/23/25 -- I pulled more grass from inside the septic garden.  I discovered that a few gladioli are still surviving there.

Also there are mosquito larvae in the trough pond on the old picnic table, so I need to get some mosquito dunks for that. :/

EDIT 5/23/25 -- I pulled more grass from inside the septic garden.

EDIT 5/23/25 -- I pulled more grass from inside the septic garden.

I've seen two fox squirrels in the forest garden.

EDIT 5/23/25 -- I potted up a purple-and-yellow torenia, a yellow portulaca, two yellow snapdragons, and two white lobelias in a big clay pot on the patio.

I've seen a female cardinal.

EDIT 5/23/25 -- I potted up crosne knotroots in one of the big taupe pots that I put on the north side of the new picnic table.  I have 2 of those pots left to fill.

EDIT 5/23/25 -- I filled the last two of the big taupe pots with half composted manure and half potting soil.  I sowed one with ground cherry seeds from Pinetree Garden Seeds, which emptied that packet; it didn't come with a lot of seeds in it.  I sowed the other pot with goldenberry seeds from John Scheeper's Kitchen Garden Seeds, which still has plenty left.

EDIT 5/23/25 -- I potted up a purple-and-white picotee petunia, a purple-and-white striped 'Wave' petunia, a 'Dusty Miller' artemesia, and two white lobelias in a clay pot on the patio.  I also added a 'Dusty Miller' artemesia to the pot of yellow flowers from earlier.

I've seen a skunk on the patio.

EDIT 5/23/25 -- We picked up 2 bags of potting soil, 2 bags of composted manure, new grass shears, and a package of mosquito dunks.  I put one of the dunks into the trough pond.

I watered the newly planted things.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.
