101 Bulletproof Fic Kinks
May. 5th, 2010 06:19 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Today's non-fannish topic appears to be the SCA. Since I know nothing about SCA, nor am I particularly interested in learning more, I decided I'd do that 101 Narrative Kinks meme. I struggled a bit when I got to 78, took a break, and then remembered all the other things that work for me!
If you happen to have a similar list, would you link me to it in the comments? I'm very curiousand nosy.
1. Well done crossovers: While I have a fondness for crack, what I really like to see are seamless crossovers that explore the ramifications of both worlds coming together.
2. Plot. I love a fic that has a real plot that drives me forward. I want to know whodunit and why. I want to see clues and foreshadowing. I want to see a story.
3. Introspectives. No. 2 should in no way discourage the idea that I also love to see short (or not so short!) vignettes that explore a characters motivations. I love to crawl inside someone's head and really see why they do what they do.
4. Strong friendships. Most of my important relationships are friendships. I would do things for friends that I wouldn't do for myself and I love seeing fics where this is the case.
5. Friends turned into enemies. Gah. Everything about No. 4, except where it has all gone horribly, horribly wrong. I love it when it hurts. I love it when I can look at something and think, "God, why? You were so close!"
6. Strong brother relationships. I don't know why I like this, but I really do. I really do, especially twins. This should not be read to mean that I like incest – not so much, no.
7. Brothers turned enemies. Like No. 5, only more so.
8. Frenimes. When people who hate each other have to work together, it creates such delicious tension.
9. Enemies who respect each other. Even better if they almost admire each other. (Light and L, I am looking at you!)
10. Fathers & sons. Mothers & daughters. Criss cross that. I love strong family units that deal with situations as unit, or not. I also like it when families fragment and the characters have to keep going.
11. Outsider POV. I absolutely adore seeing characters that I love from the POV of someone else, especially if it points out things that I don't often consider or haven't realized.
12. Unreliable narrators. Maybe I do understand what's going on, maybe I don't. But I love it, especially when narrators change versions of the "truth" as they go.
13. Snark. I love a snarky POV and a real sarcastic bent of phrase. It can turn a bad situation bearable and a good situation even funnier.
14. Humor. I love it when I LOL. Crack fic would really fit in this category for me. If it can make me laugh, it can win my heart.
15. Angst. Rip my heart out. Make me cry. Happy endings optional.
16. Fight scenes. I love them, whether it's a brawl between friends, a spy shoot out, or a giant battle complete with special effects. The more detailed the better. Although, not gore! I hate gore.
17. Fighting/fucking. Don't judge me, but this just works for me almost every time. I love it when anger crosses into lust. I love it even more when violence crosses into sex. This does NOT mean that I want non-con. Just… punching and kissing. :)
18. Power plays and power dynamics. Guh. Whether it's sex or a scene in a courtroom or a board room or on the streets, I love this. I love when characters fight for dominance.
19. Mind Games. Please, oh please. Bad guys trying to psych each other out. Friends playing jokes that prove just how well they know each other. Family dynamics that rely more on manipulation than on love
20. Bad asses who know it. I love a character who is aware – and smug – about just how awesome they are. I really love it when they walk the line and avoid slipping into bragging.
21. Competence. Characters who are good at what they do. Spies who are spyful. Soldiers who kick butt. Politicians who politic. Police who catch bad guys. There is a reason that my character type includes Light Yagami from Death Note, Scott Summers from X-men, Michael Westen from Burn Notice and Rahm Emanuel in anything ever.
22. Surprise endings. If I can't see it coming, but I think I should have? I will love it (and the author) forever.
23. Biblical quotes/imagery. Bring on the God-complexes and Messianic imagery. I got to the end of Ender's Shadow and burst into tears at that one part. If you've read it, you know. If not, I don't want to spoil it.
24. Well researched fics. I love it when settings ring true. I love science that works. I lust for historical accuracy.
25. Drunk!fic. Especially if it contains humor or introspection. Bonus points if it has both! But only when it's realistic. I drink and I’m not tiny and if I drank a bottle of tequila, I'd be unconscious, not having random adventures.
26. Consequences. If someone gets into a fight, I want to see it hurt. If someone breaks the law, I want to see what happens. If someone has sex, I want to see what it does to their relationship with the other person.
27. Seduction. I really, really like fics that concentrate on this more than the sex parts. Long slow build ups, filled with building tension and a growing anticipation… Mmmm.
28. Realism. I love to see characters get hungry or need to find a bathroom. I like it when people are grumpy because they're feet are wet and when they want a shower more than they want sex or food or anything else.
29. Allegory. Not quite the same as No. 21, less on imagery, more on plot.
30. Fairy Tale Retellings. I love this so much! Especially if the archetypes don't fall how I would have guessed. Damsel in distress is actually the hero of the source, etc. Yummy.
31. Awkward flirting. Especially if only the person being flirted with is awkward. I love it even more if the instigator finds the awkward cute.
32. A sense of destiny or fate. Especially characters who embrace this, or contrariwise, characters who utterly reject it.
33. Hands. I'm attracted to them in real life and I like reading about them. I dunno.
34. Sensuality. Whether it be bathing in fragrant water, sleeping on silk sheets, slow sex that focuses on the senses, I love it.
35. A bit of kink. What can I say? I'm particularly keen on a bit of bondage now and then, and maybe a touch of spanking/discipline play. Unf.
36. Unexpected heroes. Two words: Yellow Crayon. *dies*
37. Strong characters who suddenly fall apart…
38. … and the stereotypically "weaker" characters who put them back together.
39. Religion and faith being taken seriously in a character's life.
40. Pranks. I dunno, I just love this.
41. Sudden and unexpected turns in emotion. Make me laugh when I'm crying. Make me afraid when I feeling sentimental.
42. Safe sex. If *I* have to think/worry about it, so should everyone. S'all I'm saying.
43. Vivid descriptions. Especially of character's appearances and locales.
44. Vivid porn. I don't look for porn often, but when I do look for it, I want to see details!
45. Funny sex. People who laugh in bed. Things that go awry.
46. Awkward sex. People who get knocked in the head and lose a contact. (This may or may not be related to personal experience.) Or, you know, something like that. It's sex – it just isn't that serious!
47. Knowing something that the character doesn't. Guh. Especially when I want the character to know it so badly…
48. Scary fics that are actually scary. Give me goosebumps. Make me turn on all the lights in my house. Freak me out. (It's not hard.)
49. Characters who generally seem affable and relaxed being pushed too far and proving that they are good at being bastards.
50. Assholes. I just… really like this, okay? I like characters who are assholes. James Bond, anyone? Tony Stark? See what I mean?
51. Epistolary, told through letters and diaries, or twitter and email, or text messages and … you get the point.
52. Fics told through an abnormal medium. Like a fic told as a newspaper, or a movie script, or something along those lines. Especially if it has visuals!
53. Buddy sex. I actually prefer this to OTPs. Sometimes sex really is just about sex.
54. Women instigating sex. This is just super hot to me. Even in femmeslash, where there is not other way it could actually happen… but still. Hot.
55. Fics where characters create a family unit out of non-family.
56. A sense of history between two characters. I love feeling like the characters really know each other and could likely make decisions on the others behalf and get it right.
57. In cannon subtext, which is explored.
58. Stories that screw with gender roles and gender expectations.
59. Repetitive structures, words, phrases, imagery. Especially if it really plays into the point of the fic.
60. Alternating POVs that show that everything is not as we had previously assumed. This has to be done well – no switching in the middle of a sentence or paragraph, please.
61. Apocalypse stories! End the world. DO IT.
62. Reluctant mentors. Annoying mentees. Especially with insane happenings that force both to grow a bit more.
63. Respectful partnerships. Partnerships where both parties are actually good at what they're doing and needed.
64. Women in positions of power traditionally held by men.
65. Love triangles where all parties are aware of what's going on and unsure of what to do.
66. Puns. Especially in dialog.
67. Pyrric victories. I love wins that feel like losses.
68. I also love losses that feel like wins.
69. Strong characters who get sick and need to be taken care of. Especially when they don't like it. Even more especially when they grudgingly admit that it's nice.
70. AUs that are unexpected, but brilliant. I almost didn't include this, because so many AUs fall flat to me, but when they pop, they really POP.
71. Obsessive love. Unhealthy, all-consuming, burn-the-world-for-you love.
72. Characters who smile just before dealing the killing blow.
73. Characters who smile while they're receiving the killing blow.
74. Characters who willingly suffer to protect others.
75. Bad guys who are sympathetic.
76. Good guys who cross lines and consequences.
77. Forced marriages that turn out pretty good in the end.
78. Angels and demons, especially if humans are just pawns in their war.
79. Final stands with all or nothing stakes.
80. Secrets that only come out slowly.
81. Characters who are not who they appear to be.
82. Situations with no right answer–a comedy of ethics, as I’ve heard it called.
83. Doomed love.
84. Couples who can – and do – depend on each other to great success.
85. Pets in fics. Especially unexpected love for pets.
86. Tiny details that come from an intimate knowledge of canon.
87. Social issues and consequences, especially if characters realize that it really isn't all about them (even though it is).
88. Characters who hurt for someone else more than they would hurt for themselves.
89. Girls (women in general, but especially younger girls) being competent at what they do and not afraid to put themselves forward
90. People making the best of a bad situation and eventually realizing that it worked out better that way anyway.
91. Characters that are smarter than me.
92. Slice of life fics, that don’t have overreaching points, but still emphasize important features.
93. "It seemed like a good idea at he time…"
94. Murphy's Law, or days when just everything goes wrong.
95. Fics that center around a mundane activity, like cooking.
96. Fics that really act as meta.
97. Sandwiches as a plot device. This is relatively new, but I do love it so!
98. Silence between friends that needs to be broken.
99. Hard, but honest, conversations.
100. Characters who have a relationship so intense that they don't always need to speak.
101. Dreams in fics, or dream sequences, that reflect what's really going on. Especially if the character knows it. Especially, if they still don't change what they're doing.

Date: 2010-05-06 02:08 am (UTC)Re 1. You've seen these USA crossover promos, right? In the second one, Neal Caffrey is totally flirting with Gus. ♥

Date: 2010-05-06 04:31 am (UTC)(And Gus, but we all knew that!)
Do you have a list? I'd be curious to see it if you did. (Did I miss it? I miss a lot.)

Date: 2010-05-06 07:11 pm (UTC)"What?" She smiled brilliantly and tucked her guns and explosives back into her purse. "I got Mr. FBI's attention like you wanted, didn't I?"
"I'm standing right here," Peter said. From a few tables back, out of the corner of his eye, he saw Neal shrug apologetically. Right. Neal didn't like guns, but it would have been nice if he'd mentioned that his friends of a friend of Mozzie's liked them a little too much. Doing business with a burned spy... This was going to make Hughes' head spin.
***
"How do you know that?" Shawn demanded, but he was talking to air, because Gus abandoned him to go talk to some well-dressed guy at the bar. Okay, so he had a cool hat, but that was no excuse for rudeness. "Excuse me, excuse me," he muttered, weaving his way around the tables. Really, when did Gus get so nimble-footed? It was like an obstacle course in here, with all the people and small children and servers with trays of delicious, aromatic food... Focus, Shawn.
The well-dressed guy touched the brim of his hat and then slid his other hand into the pockets of his pants. Shawn's fake!psychic senses tingled. He was signalling someone, but who?
Shawn decided to accidentally-on-purpose bump into him, to see if that would shake anyone out of the woodwork, but all that happened was Gus getting splashed by the guy's drink.
"Shawn!" said Gus, clearly not pleased by the guy's lack of coordination.
"He spilled it," said Shawn, pointing fingers. "Aren't you going to introduce me to your new friend?"
"Neal Caffrey," said the well-dressed guy, holding out a hand.
"He's with the FBI," added Gus. "But not really. Hold on to your wallet."
Well, that was easy enough. "I didn't bring my wallet."
"What? I thought this lunch was your treat!"
"Yes, I took you here."
"Uh, guys?" said Neal. They weren't paying any attention to him, so he slipped away and met up with Lauren by the front door. He handed her Gus' business card.
Gus had his hands on his hips. "I drove!"
"You won't let me drive," Shawn pointed out. Then he looked around. "...Hey, where's our new friend?"

Also, how much did I love Fi and Mike? "What gun?" ... "Is that a grenade?"

I totally understand this!

Date: 2010-05-06 04:32 am (UTC)Although, I think it's more of a list of things I like rather than bullet-proof kinks. Though some of them, yes. Some of them definitely are!
And yay! I'm so glad someone understands my love of assholes!
